CARMIGNANO: A VILLAGE IN THE HEART OF TUSCANY
The territory of Carmignano extends among the rolling hills of Montalbano and could be defined as “a little Tuscany” because it contains everything that has made this region famous and loved throughout the world: great art, landscape, archaeology, oil, wine and good food.
The area is located at an average altitude of about 200m above sea level and the slopes range from steep and rugged to gentle. The climate, thanks to the proximity of the Apennines, can count on constant fresh winds, essential for tempering summer nights, determining an excellent temperature range. The average annual rainfall is less than a thousand millimetres. Most of the precipitation occurs in autumn and winter, but there is generally a good water supply in summer as well and fresh and dry harvests.
The rural landscape is framed by olive groves and vineyards in a mosaic of terrains, exposures and microclimates that ensure the uniqueness of the products.
CARMIGNANO D.O.C.G.
Carmignano DOCG is a red wine of great tradition and prestige, produced in our territory. Its production dates back to the Etruscan era, as evidenced by the discovery of wine vases inside tombs. The first written mention of its name dates back to 1396 and the poet Francesco Redi in the 17th century extolled its qualities.
Cosimo I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, issued a decree to regulate the production of Carmignano wine, establishing the permitted grape varieties, cultivation practices and the maximum quantity of wine that could be produced. The decree aimed to guarantee the quality of Carmignano wine, protecting its reputation and commercial value. The decree was one of the first examples of regulation of wine production in Europe.
Carmignano DOCG is obtained from a selection of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, grown in the Carmignano area and vinified according to traditional methods. The wine has an intense ruby red color and a complex bouquet of berries, spices, tobacco and chocolate. On the palate it is soft, balanced and long-lasting, with well-structured and elegant tannins. A true example of excellent quality and Tuscan winemaking tradition.
